The 2005 Annual Meeting of the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CCNP) will take place at the Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel in St. John’s, Nfld., from Saturday, July 2, to Tuesday, July 5. The theme of the meeting will be “Brain mechanisms in psychiatric disorders.”
Our plenary speakers will be:
Dr. Anthony Grace (University of Pittsburgh) “A hypothesis for the etiology of schizophrenia”
Dr. Michael Meaney (McGill University) “Early life events and vulnerability to chronic illness, including depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and drug abuse”
A special plenary symposium, chaired by Dr. Oakley Ray (Vanderbilt University), will address “Current issues in psychopharmacology: a CINP executive perspective.” The panel comprises:
Dr. Herbert Meltzer (Vanderbilt University) “Serotonin receptors: the key to atypical antipsychotic drug action”
Dr. Brian Leonard (National University of Ireland) “Inflammation, stress and depression: What do antidepressants do?”
Dr. Torgny Svensson (Karolinska Instutitet, Sweden) “Alpha2 adrenoceptor blockage in antipsychotic drug action and cognitive enhancement in schizophrenia”
Award lectures — winners to be announced — will include:

Immune mechanisms in psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases
Novel pharmacological approaches to dementia treatment

The amygdala and bed nucleus of stria terminalis: motivation and emotion
Psychopharmacological treatment of aggression, self-injury and destruction/disruption in the developmentally disabled
Molecular mechanisms of behavioural change
Imaging studies of the serotonergic system in affective disorders
A public lecture, “Advances in understanding and treating mood disorders,” will be delivered by Dr. Sidney Kennedy (University of Toronto).
Posters will be available for the duration of the meeting; there will be specified session times for short oral presentations.
The banquet will take place on Monday, July 4. Accommodation has been reserved at the Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel and at Memorial University of Newfoundland residences. It is recommended that attendees book their rooms well in advance; in order to qualify for the group rates, callers must identify themselves as being with the CCNP and call no later than June 1.
