Heinz Lehmann Award

Dr. Glenda MacQueen is the recipient of the 2014 CCNP Heinz Lehmann Award. Dr. MacQueen is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alta., and is the Vice-dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. Dr. MacQueen is also a member of the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. Dr. MacQueen is recognized for her outstanding research on the behavioural and neural markers of depression in humans, in particular the relation between brain structure and function and depression. This award is designed to recognize outstanding research achievements by Canadian scientists in the field of neuropsychopharmacology, and this year the award is for clinical/translational research. The award, donated by Pfizer Canada Inc., consists of a $2000 honorarium and a suitably engraved plaque. Congratulations to Dr. MacQueen!

Innovations in Neuropsychopharmacology Award

Dr. Andres Lozano is the recipient of the 2014 CCNP Innovations in Neuropsychopharmacology Award. Dr. Lozano is Professor and Chairman of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto and holds both the RR Tasker Chair in Functional Neurosurgery and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Neuroscience. Dr. Lozano is recognized for his research on the therapeutic potential of modulating the activity of dysfunctional brain circuits in patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders using deep brain stimulation, especially in patients with treatment-resistant depression. This award is designed to recognize outstanding and innovative research in the basic or clinical fields of neuropsychopharmacology, and this year the award is for clinical/translational research. The award, donated by Pfizer Canada Inc., consists of a $2000 honorarium and a suitably engraved plaque. Congratulations to Dr. Lozano!

Young Investigator Award

Dr. Alasdair Barr is the recipient of the 2014 CCNP Young Investigator Award. Dr. Barr is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anaesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. Dr. Barr has done outstanding research into the role of presynaptic SNARE proteins in schizophrenia, drug withdrawal and aging. He has more recently focused on strategies to alleviate the metabolic side effects of many second-generation antipsychotic drugs. This award is designed to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of research in neuropsychopharmacology by an individual young basic scientist or clinical investigator in Canada, and this year the award is for basic/translational research. The award, donated by Pfizer Canada Inc., consists of a $2000 honorarium and a suitably engraved plaque. Congratulations to Dr. Barr!

These awards will be conferred at the 37th CCNP Annual Meeting in Banff, Alta., June 18–21, 2014. This year’s theme is “Discovery and Translational Research in Major Psychiatric Disorders,” and includes the award lectures, plenary seminars and symposia covering an exciting range of applications (imaging, cognitive, genetic, cellular, molecular) to investigate the major psychiatric illnesses that burden our society. An excellent series of plenary presentations has been planned, including presentations by Drs. Joel Kleinman (Lieber Institute), Michel Hamon (ECNP Plenary Lecture), Caroline Tait (Aboriginal Mental Health speaker from the University of Saskatchewan), Francesc Artigas (Presidential Lecture) and a special symposium from the National Natural Science Research Foundation of China and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
