Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology 2020 award winners

Heinz Lehmann Award

Dr. Martin Alda is the recipient of the 2020 Heinz Lehmann Award. Dr. Alda is a professor of psychiatry and the Killam Chair in Mood Disorders at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He also holds appointments at McGill University, University of Pittsburgh and the National Institute of Mental Health in the Czech Republic. This award recognizes the outstanding contributions and distinguished career of a single individual in the field of research in neuropsychopharmacology in Canada, and this year it is being awarded for clinical research. The award, donated by Pfizer Canada Inc., consists of a $2000 honorarium and an engraved plaque. Congratulations to Dr. Alda!

Innovations in Neuropsychopharmacology Research Award

Dr. Jeffrey Meyer is the recipient of the 2020 Innovations in Neuropsychopharmacology Research Award. Dr. Meyer is a Tier I Canada Research Chair in the Neurochemistry of Depression and leads the Neurochemical Imaging Program in Mood and Anxiety Disorders at the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. He is also a full professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Psychiatry. This award recognizes innovative research in neuropsychopharmacology by an independent investigator, and it is being given this year for clinical research. The award, donated by Pfizer Canada Inc., consists of a $2000 honorarium and an engraved plaque. Congratulations to Dr. Meyer!

CCNP Medal

Dr. Beverley Orser is the recipient of the 2020 CCNP Medal. Dr. Orser is a clinician-scientist and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto, co-director of the Perioperative Brain Health Centre, and a practising anesthesiologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Ontario. This award, sponsored by the CCNP, recognizes an individual for their meritorious career in and outstanding contribution to neuropsychopharmacology in Canada based on their activities in education, administration and/or patient care. The award consists of a bronze medal engraved with the name of the recipient. Congratulations to Dr. Orser!

Young Investigator Award

Dr. Caroline Menard is the recipient of the 2020 Young Investigator Award. Dr. Menard is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Faculty of Medicine and CERVO Brain Research Center, Université Laval in Québec, Quebec. The award is being given this year for basic research. The award, donated by Pfizer Canada Inc., recognizes outstanding contributions to research in neuropsychopharmacology and consists of a $2000 honorarium and a suitably engraved plaque. Congratulations to Dr. Menard!

  • These awards were to be conferred at the annual meeting of the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology; however, the meeting has been cancelled because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. An alternate means of delivering the awards to the recipients is being considered.
