Dear readers,
As a psychiatrist working in Taiwan, I have encountered many cases where multiple relatives have developed mental illnesses. In such situations, I often consider the medication response of the first case when prescribing medication for subsequent cases. This approach has generally yielded positive treatment outcomes. For me, genetics is a crucial factor, and it is also helpful when family members have positive experiences with a particular psychiatric medication. This can encourage subsequent family members to accept similar medication treatment more readily.
I agree with the author's perspective that selecting medication based on genetic testing is a trend for the future. Utilizing pharmacogenetics in mental health treatment has the potential to personalize treatment plans and improve outcomes, especially in cases of first episode psychosis. This approach can enable clinicians to identify medications that are more likely to be effective while reducing the likelihood of harmful side effects.
As a mental health professional, I believe that personalized medicine has enormous potential to transform mental health treatment. By incorporating genetic testing into clinical practice, we can further optimize treatment plans and provide tailored care to our patients.
Thank you for reading.
Sincerely,
LienChung, Wei
