Some investigators point out that ATP is important for acidifying vesicle lumens which would prevent genuine neurotransmitters from degradation, for creating a proton gradient for vesicular neurotransmitter uptake, for vesicle priming, and for steps in exocytosis itself (Sperlagh & Vizi, 1996; Yao & Bajjalieh, 2008). Thus it is acknowledged that ATP may be present in vesicles for functions other than neurotransmission.
