Lack of an association between anticipatory alpha oscillations and attentional selection in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
2022, Clinical NeurophysiologyCitation Excerpt :Analyses of behavioral performance and simultaneous EEG recordings revealed remarkable group differences. Behaviorally, compared with TD children, 8−13-year-old children with ADHD still performed worse in cued visual search tasks with lower accuracy and larger response variations, consistent with previous studies showing attentional deficits in visual search for children with ADHD (Wang et al., 2016; Johnson, et al., 2007; Nigg et al., 1997; Carter et al., 1995). For EEG, high-accuracy typically developing children showed a strong temporal association between anticipatory cue-induced alpha lateralization and the subsequent target-elicited N2pc (the biomarker of attention selection), the latter of which further predicted the behavioral reaction time (RT) of visual search.
Post-error adjustments and ADHD symptoms in adults: The effect of laterality and state regulation
2016, Brain and CognitionCitation Excerpt :The present study aims to address a gap in the literature exploring the role of brain laterality in post-error adjustments in subjects with high and low levels of self-reported ADHD. Many behavioural studies have reported atypical brain laterality in ADHD on a variety of lateralization tasks including a line bisection test, the dichotic listening task, Posner’s cueing task, and the lexical decision task (Carter, Krener, Chaderjian, Northcutt, & Wolfe, 1995; Hale, Zaidel, McGough, Phillips, & McCracken, 2006; Hale et al., 2005; Song & Hakoda, 2012). Some researchers have concluded that atypical brain laterality might be seen as a key component of cognitive impairments in ADHD (Hale et al., 2009).
Exogenous orienting of visual-spatial attention in ADHD children
2013, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :This process is present since early childhood and its maturation with age depends more on other aspects like the speed of executing responses and use of explicit knowledge (Rueda et al., 2004). In studying cue-evoked ERPs in ADHD endogenous orienting cues are often utilized, as exogenous orienting is supposed to be reflexive and automatic (Mayer et al., 2004) and, thus, less susceptible to be affected by the executive control or behavioral inhibition impairments that characterize ADHD (Carter et al., 1995; Huang-Pollock and Nigg, 2003). Nevertheless, from the state regulation hypothesis, the exogenous orienting of attention should also be affected.
