2022, Journal of Affective DisordersCitation Excerpt :Compared with fMRI, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has a number of advantages such as (1) relatively inexpensive, (2) low noise, (3) low need for immobility, (4) measuring oxy-hemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) consistent with the advantages of fMRI's blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal, deoxy-hemoglobin (Deoxy-Hb), and total hemoglobin (Total-Hb), (5) having a higher temporal resolution (milliseconds vs fMRI's seconds) (Ho et al., 2020; Quaresima et al., 2012). Furthermore, it carries additional advantages of being safe and non-invasive (Hoshi and Tamura, 1993; Quaresima et al., 2012; Villringer et al., 1993). The light spectrum of NIRS is typically in a window between 650 and 1000 nm.

But when answering questions without difficulty, no significant differences in hemoglobin oxygenation were observed(Hoshi and Tamura, 1993). Furthermore, Kato et al. observed that in five healthy adults, cerebral blood volume (HbO2 and HbR) increased during photic stimulation (i.e., stimulation of the retina with a bright flash of light) and promptly regressed afterward to baseline (Kato et al., 1993).
