Functional differentiation in the transverse plane of the hippocampus: An update on activity segregation within the DG and CA3 subfields
2021, Brain Research BulletinCitation Excerpt :Furthermore, the suprapyramidal blade is more sensitive to fluctuating levels of the neuromodulators corticosteroid and mineralcortin, as demonstrated by greater cell death following adrenalectomy (Gould et al., 1990; Hamadi et al., 2016; Gerth et al., 1998; Sloviter et al., 1993) and mineralcortin knockout (Gass et al., 2000), respectively. Interestingly, neuromodulatory inputs, themselves, appear to be organized without selectivity for either blade (Amaral and Campbell, 1986; Oleskevich et al., 1989; Oleskevich and Descarries, 1990; Freund, 1992; Frotscher et al., 1992). In summary, biased local and long-range connectivity, including greater innervation by DG interneurons and the supramammilary nucleus, as well as enhanced responsiveness to entorhinal cortical afferents and the main stress mediators, and distinct interblade genomic expression patterns, are some of the potential mechanisms underlying the transverse segregation of behaviorally-relevant information towards the suprapyramidal blade.
Dissecting the role of subiculum in epilepsy: Research update and translational potential
2021, Progress in NeurobiologyCitation Excerpt :Other brain regions that provide inputs to the subiculum include the parasubiculum, presubiculum, retrosplenial cortex, perirhinal cortex, medial septum, nucleus accumbens, amygdala and several thalamic nuclei. Moreover, the subiculum also receives dense monoaminergic projections from several nuclei and expresses the respective receptors, such as multiple histaminergic projections from the tuberomammillary nucleus, serotoninergic projections from the dorsal raphe, and so forth (Hu and Chen, 2017; Oleskevich and Descarries, 1990). Notably, segregation of these afferent projections is reported in distinct subicular subregions as well.
