Three major psychiatric disorders share specific dynamic alterations of intrinsic brain activity
2022, Schizophrenia ResearchCitation Excerpt :Our findings indicate that SZ and BD have abnormal brain dynamics in the caudate and thalamus, which is consistent with previous studies, suggesting the abnormal dALFF variability in these areas can be a distinctive feature of BD and SZ. In addition, We found the specific dALFF alteration for SZ and MDD in the bilateral lingual gyri, calcarine cortices that are responsible for visual processing and the generation of visual imagery (Courtney and Ungerleider, 1997; Peirce, 2015). Our findings of dALFF reduction in the visual cortices are consistent with other reports in SZ (Meda et al., 2015; Turner et al., 2013b), and MDD (Liu et al., 2014).
Zooming-in on higher-level vision: High-resolution fMRI for understanding visual perception and awareness
2021, Progress in NeurobiologyCitation Excerpt :These properties are mainly studied in early visual areas at a fine spatial scale of single cells, columns, and layers using invasive methods in animals. Within the second field of research, we study the processing of complex visual information in the higher-level areas: selectivity to objects, faces, and places in the temporal lobe (Courtney and Ungerleider, 1997), the bottom-up and top-down attention networks (Corbetta and Shulman, 2011, 2002). This knowledge about specialized areas and networks has been gathered primarily at a coarse spatial scale of conventional human PET, fMRI or lesion studies.
