2018, Progress in Medicinal ChemistryCitation Excerpt :In the central nervous system, VMAT2 is predominantly located on small synaptic vesicles with a smaller portion localized to the dense-core vesicles [8–11]. Once VMAT2 is present on synaptic vesicles in the presynaptic terminal, it acts as a stoichiometric H+-ATPase antiporter utilizing an electrochemical gradient to drive transport [5,12]. The H+-ATPase utilizes ATP hydrolysis to generate the energy required to move H+ ions into the vesicle, creating an acidic (pH ~ 5.5) environment inside the vesicle [4].
